Head Professor | Black Belt
Markus Carvalho is the Black Belt responsible for the Renzo Gracie Spokane Valley family. He’s a 27-year-old Brazilian who started training Jiu Jitsu at the age of 8. Markus teaches kids and adults both the recreational and competitive sides of the sport. Markus’ inspiration in Jiu Jitsu comes not only from the intricacy of the art, but also from how it helps shape a better world socially, culturally, and ethically.

Program Director; RGK 2 & Women's Instructor | Brown Belt
Charlotte Carvalho started training when she was 12-years-old, and started assistant coaching by the age of 14. Now, she teaches the RGK 2 class and heads up the women’s program. She double-majored in Journalism and Public Relations at Biola University which set her up for success managing the facility.

RGK 1 Instructor | Brown Belt
Elizabeth McKinley has been practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 10 years under Masters Marcelo Alonso, Jean Jacques Machado, and now Professor Markus Carvalho. She is a brown belt who teaches the RGK 1 class, and looks forward to the random outbursts and lightbulb moments of her students.

Teens Instructor | Purple Belt
Tanner Davis is a BJJ purple belt, coach, and full-time dad to three sons—two of whom wrestle and train Jiu Jitsu thus turning his house into a constant open mat. He wrestled for six years and has spent the last seven years training BJJ. A Post Falls native now living in Spokane, Tanner loves coaching the teen class, where he focuses on solid fundamentals, mental toughness, and reminding everyone to breathe.

Instructor | Blue Belt
Louie Lomeli began in boxing before he found his love for Jiu Jitsu. He started training three years ago with his sons, and one year ago started teaching. He currently runs the Friday Noon Adults Fundamentals class as well as the Saturday morning RGK all ages class. His goal is to teach his students how to show discipline, respect, and integrity both on and off the mat.

Assistant Instructor | Purple Belt
Nick Uhlenkhott started training Jiu Jitsu three years ago for self-defense, and for the past two years has had the opportunity to teach as well. What began as a way to protect himself has become a second home—a place where he can keep learning and share that growth with others. Currently a purple belt, he is grateful for the chance to be on the mat every day, learning, teaching, and growing alongside his teammates.

Assistant Instructor | Blue Belt
Having trained at RGSV for a year and a half, Amber Cooke joined after her family signed up. Jiu Jitsu has reignited her passion for martial arts and self-defense. She enjoys supporting our dedicated coaches and instructors and find joy in witnessing the progress of the younger students as they thrive in the sport. Her journey in Jiu Jitsu has not only enhanced her skills, but also strengthened her appreciation for the community we build together.

Administration Support
Kelsey Wurst is our tournament coordinator and administration support. She plays a key role in organizing events and coordinating our students at tournaments. Any questions regarding registration for tournaments, and Kelsey’s your girl! With two children competing in Jiu Jitsu, she was inspired to begin training in 2025.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. My son has been wanting to get into some type of martial arts and I found this place to try for a free class. Right away the kids made him feel welcomed, the instructors are phenomenal. The flexibility with the classes are a huge bonus. Highly recommend for any age kids.

100% recommend this place. My 5 year old started his Jiu jitsu here. Coach Elizabeth was incredible. She is very respectful and patient with kids. If you are looking to start your BJJ journey, this place will not disappoint you. Coach Charlotte was very nice. Her and coach Elizabeth are both welcoming! We’ll miss them and if ever we come back to Spokane again, for sure we’ll re-enroll my kid here again.

My son struggles social anxiety, he is currently homeschooled. The homeschooling program has been an awesome step into the world of jujitsu. The instructors are very diligent about structure but, do such a great job with the kids. They run a really great program from all that I’ve seen!
