RESULTS: The Forum Open | May 2026

June 01, 20263 min read

On Saturday, May 30, Renzo Gracie Spokane Valley took one adult and 30 youth students to the Forum Open.

Team RGSV secured the Overall Academy and Best Academy rankings at the Forum tournament.

Though there were many wins, there were also lessons that needed to be learned.

For Gina Lomeli, she learned how to come back stronger after a loss. Gina went up a weight division and competed against girls who were significantly bigger than she was. However, the “firecracker” did not go down without a fight. She lost her first match via points. Coming back with a vengeance in round two, she took her opponent down to the ground gaining mount. Her opponent rolled over into Gina’s closed guard where the “firecracker” executed a beautiful armbar in under 30 seconds.

An exceptional note, in David McElliott’s NoGi match against an athlete from Idaho, he won via points. However, as an 8-year-old gray-white belt, David managed to execute a high level knee lever from half-guard, effectively rolling his opponent over. He passed to mount where he maintained position until the time ran out.

For this tournament, Coaches Tanner, Louie, Dakota and Jason all stepped up to ensure each athlete had a coach. Their coaching was confident and led their athletes to victory. With a loss, they were encouraging, and helped them get after it again in their next match.
