On Saturday, March 18, Renzo Gracie Spokane Valley took four adults and seven youth students to the NAGA Washington Grappling Championship.

While not all students took home hardware, each athlete fought with their hearts and learned valuable lessons.

A notable mention is Jax Sweeten who competed for the first time this past weekend. Originally signed up for the NoGi Novice division, he was moved to the beginner division. He fought with great heart and, though he didn’t come out on top for NoGi, Jax learned some valuable lessons. Those lessons served him well in the gi division, where he won three matches, leading him to take home the bronze medal.

Having no one in her white belt gi division, Aliona Radu moved up to compete against blue belts. For her second competition, and against people a rank higher than she, Aliona performed valiantly. She gave up no submissions — only losing by points. Earlier, in her NoGi division, she won her first match by points 4-3 which led her to take home silver.

Professor Markus Carvalho competed in the NoGi Expert Adult Light HeavyWeight division where he took second place. In his first match, he quickly entangled the legs, searching for a submission. After his opponent didn’t tap to a calf-slicer, Professor Markus found the inside heel hook and got the tap. His second match was a leg-entry battle with a 10th Planet athlete where he lost via points.
